Summertime

I love this time of year. Flowers blooming, everything is growing again. To me its such a time of renewal. Renewal in my commitment to my health, commitment to my family, and commitment to doing the things I love.  Although I am a little late getting started, my garden is planted, and looking forward to all these great, organic vegetables.

cart

I built a garden cart a couple of years ago to plant my herbs and lettuce. It seemed I always had trouble in my garden with the herbs, so this cart has been very helpful.  This year I have red and green lettuce, arugula, broccoli rabe, basil, cilantro, parsley, tarragon, sage, and rosemary. Made a great salad last night with some lettuce and herbs.

For my garden, this year, I'm planting a lot of my usual. Living in Central NJ near a lot of farms, you can get some great quality plants for the garden. I've had no luck trying to grow vegetables from seed, so I buy my plants from a local farm. One day I'll figure it out.

vegetables

This year I have plum tomatoes, grape tomatoes, cubanelle pepper, cayenne peppers, Hungarian wax hot peppers, green string beans, zucchini and cucumbers. I would love to hear what you grow in your garden if you have one.

I always add some marigolds to the garden. Their pungent aroma is a natural way to keep the bugs and small animals away. I put them around the perimeter, then scattered through out the garden. They also add some nice color and are easily grown.

Vegetables are a good way to crowd out some unhealthy foods. They are rich in vitamins and minerals, high in fiber  and mostly low in calories, that is unless you batter, fry or mix in a cheese casserole. There is also an abundance of phytonutrients in vegetables. Phytonutrients is what gives vegetables brilliant colors, delicious flavors and their unique aromas. They are also the nutrients most closely linked to prevention of diseases. So go out and get some vegetables.
